IMCC Conference

International Marine Claims Conference

About the conference

The background and history of IMCC is outlined elsewhere in this website. The International Marine Claims Conference was formed to facilitate and encourage communication amongst insurers far and wide across the globe. It is primarily a conference for insurers and their experts with numbers for the marine experts being restricted to ensure that the conference remains focussed for claims handlers within insurers and brokers. As such attendance is by invitation only and in spite of continuous increases in capacity, demand continues to outstrip the availability of places each year.

Conference has now established a very credible presence on the calendar of Marine Claims Professionals around the globe. Whilst creating a very lively and friendly atmosphere this Conference has also created debate on serious and ongoing topics.

Although the organisers, Charlotte Warr and Ann Waite are based in London, much input on topical issues is provided by the IMCC Strategy Group with representation from around the globe providing guidance from around the World on the content and composition of Conference. However, the organising group is fluid and evolving, so volunteers and ideas are invited from any suitable source. IMCC is run on a non-profit making basis and usually speakers are full paying delegates, which helps to make the conference one of the best value for money events in the maritime calendar.

One major issue that has arisen from this Conference and which the delegates have a desire to see addressed, is how to attract the right calibre of people into the marine claims section of the insurance industry and provide career paths and education in order to properly support the ship owners and shippers of the world in the future. IMCC has strong links with IUMI and is actively discussing with their newly formed Education Committee. Additionally frequent dialogue is undertaken with the Association of Average Adjusters who in 2016 created their own prize of a sponsored place at IMCC for the most outstanding candidate in the previous 12 months’ Associateship examinations.

One initiative instigated in 2010 to encourage younger people to attend Conference, was the introduction of a sponsored place for a claims practitioner working within an insurance company, broker or P&I club. The successful candidate has the conference fee waived. For further details, please refer to the relevant section of the website.

Although the Conference remains independent, it is proud to have accepted the invitation from the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) to become an affiliate organisation and since 2008 delegates representing IMCC attend IUMI’s annual conference with either the President or Secretary General of IUMI attending IMCC.

Traditionally, if tradition can be established in just a few years, the technical subjects presented at the Conference have been relevant to the day to day work of the delegates, but some subjects of a much broader interest have been presented. Take a look at the past programmes

The Organisers are always open to ideas for Conference topics, content and potential activities in order to maintain the unique nature of this event. Please email us with any thoughts or topics you believe would be interesting.
