Biography

Herman Steen is a Partner at Wikborg Rein’s Oslo office and is part of the firm’s Shipping Offshore practice as well as the Maritime and Offshore Emergency Response Team. He is also one of the editors of the firm’s Shipping Offshore Update.

Steen is mainly working with international maritime law and marine insurance law. He has particular experience with maritime casualties, assisting Norwegian and international clients, including P&I clubs, hull insurers and shipowners in connection with investigation of incidents, salvage, wreck removal, pollution, collision, grounding, cargo claims etc. He has extensive experience with cover disputes under P&I and hull insurances. He is also working with decommissioning of oil platforms and other offshore installations.

He has wide litigation experience, both as a lawyer and as a judge. He has acted as a mediator on numerous occasions. He is also an experienced negotiator, both in relation to deals and disputes.
Steen has been working out of the firm’s offices in Oslo, London and Kobe, Japan. He has previously been deputy judge in Oslo District Court and Drammen District Court, and also junior researcher with the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, where he wrote a thesis on voyage charter parties which has been published in the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law’s law journal. He has a masters degree in maritime law from King’s College London. He has attended Harvard Law School’s Program of Instruction for Lawyers (Negotiation).

Steen has for many years been teaching and marking student exams at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, and is regularly publishing maritime law and marine insurance law articles in Norwegian and international periodicals.
